Terry Mitchinson - Borough Councillor for Panshanger

Terry was elected as a Welwyn Hatfield councillor for Panshanger Ward in May 2017 following a career spanning 41 years in local newspapers, magazines and associated media platforms.

He grew up in Welwyn Garden City, attending Maran infants, Harwood Hill junior and Monk’s Walk senior schools.

He has an Honorary Master of Letters degree from the University of Hertfordshire for services to the county and local journalism.

Terry is a founder trustee of Willow (charity giving special days for young adults with life-limiting illnesses) and a long-standing patron of Isabel Hospice.

He has been a serial charity fundraiser over many decades raising thousands of pounds for a variety of local and national worthy causes including Willow, Isabel Hospice, Herts Air Ambulance, Herts Action on Disability, Macmillan, and The British Heart Foundation.

His latest exploits were at the annual Rotary Walk. With the help of his many friends, colleagues and family members he raised more than £500 for Riding for the Disabled at Digswell Hill.

Terry won a Lifetime Achievement ‘Welwyn Oscar’ award in June 2017 for services to local newspapers, the community and charity and is an honorary member of both Hatfield and WGC Rotary Clubs in recognition of his services to Welwyn Hatfield.

He is a board director of Welwyn Garden Town Centre BID (Business Improvement District).

Professionally he has a number of management and editorial qualifications including an ISM Certificate in Management from the Institute of Leadership and Management (MILM), an Operational General Manager certificate from the Institute of Directors and an Award in Leadership and Management from the Archant Leadership Academy.

During his time working at the Welwyn Hatfield Times he was also a launch editor of several sister newspapers and magazines.

On being made redundant after more than 40 years at the WHT series, nearly a quarter of a century as editor, he set up a small editorial, PR and marketing consultancy, EditorMitch Consultancy

Terry lives with his partner of almost four decades Carol in Welwyn.

They are keen history lovers and members of the National Trust, English Heritage and the Historical Houses Association.

They enjoy traveling and sightseeing when they can and particularly love visiting Italy, Rhodes and especially the many beautiful places in Britain.

Terry enjoys watching a range of sports, walking and, when the opportunity arises, playing golf.

He fears; however, his skiing days are sadly behind him!
